The mind beneath the mind

Unconscious

Depth psychology names the vast region of the psyche that lies outside the light of waking awareness: the unconscious. Here live the repressed wishes, forgotten memories, instincts, and complexes that shape behavior from below, often more powerfully than any conscious intention. The discovery that the ego is not master in its own house overturned the old confidence in pure reason; we are moved by currents we did not author and cannot directly see. The unconscious is not merely a basement of the discarded but the deeper continent of which the conscious self is only a small island.

For the seeker this is the territory of the inner work. What is denied does not vanish; it acts in the dark, returning as symptom, dream, projection, and fate. To grow is to make the unconscious conscious, to descend into one's own depths and meet what was hidden there. In that descent lies both the wound and the treasure, for the same depths that compel us also hold the unlived life waiting to be redeemed.
These two discoveries - that the life of our sexual instincts cannot be wholly tamed, and that mental processes are in themselves unconscious and only reach the ego and come under its control through incomplete and untrustworthy perceptions - these two discoveries amount to a statement that the ego is not master in its own house.Sigmund Freud

In all chaos there is a cosmos, in all disorder a secret order.Carl Jung
Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.Carl Jung
The unconscious is the true psychic reality.Sigmund Freud
