Providence
Providence is the conviction that a benevolent intelligence governs the unfolding of things, that beneath the apparent chaos there is care. To the Stoic it is the rational order of a cosmos best lived in agreement with; to the Christian mystic it is the Father who numbers the hairs of your head and works all things together for good. The one who awakens to living in God's world here and now begins to see in every event a part of a beautiful, symmetrical plan, even the events that wound.

The practice of providence is trust: the sacrament of the present moment, the self-abandonment to a wisdom larger than your planning. Thy will be done is not defeat but the highest alignment, the small will resting into the great. This is not passivity, for you still act, still labor, still choose, but you act without the gnawing anxiety of one who believes the whole weight rests on him alone. To live in providence is to feel held, to know that you live in an ordered and loving universe, and to let that knowing turn fear into peace and striving into participation.
