Symbols and the unseen

Numinous

The Numinous is the felt presence of the holy, the awe and trembling that overtakes the soul when it stands before the wholly other. It is the mystery that both terrifies and fascinates, the dread and the magnetic draw that no doctrine can supply and no argument explain. Jung adopted the word for the charged moments when an archetype is touched and the ego feels itself in the presence of something vastly greater than itself.

Numinous experience cannot be summoned at will, only made welcome. It arrives in deep dream, in sacred place, in the sudden hush before beauty or death, leaving the one it touches changed. On the map of mind it marks the live wire of religious feeling, the point where the unseen makes itself unmistakably felt, and where genuine transformation most often begins.

The main interest of my work is not concerned with the treatment of neuroses but rather with the approach to the numinous. But the fact is that the approach to the numinous is the real therapy, and inasmuch as you attain to the numinous experiences you are released from the curse of pathology.
Man becomes aware of the sacred because it manifests itself, shows itself, as something wholly different from the profane.
