Flow

Flow is the effortless current that carries you when self and action become one. The contemplatives have always known it as the fruit of letting go: the Taoist wu wei, doing without forcing, the still mind to which the whole universe surrenders. In our own age it was named anew as the state of optimal experience, that fully absorbed engagement in which time falls away, the inner critic falls silent, and the doing seems to do itself. To be in flow is to stop standing in your own way.

The traditions teach that flow is not seized but allowed. It arises where challenge meets skill, where attention is whole and undivided, where the grip of the anxious ego releases. The seeker cultivates the conditions, a clear task, a settled mind, surrender of the need to control, and then steps aside to let the larger current move through. What flows through you in that state is wiser and freer than anything the small self could have engineered.
