Equanimity

Equanimity is the even, unshaken balance of the heart amid the changing winds of pleasure and pain, praise and blame, gain and loss. It is the mountain that the weather moves over but does not move. Neither indifference nor suppression, it is a spacious, warm steadiness that can meet all things without being toppled by any.

In Buddhism it is upekkha, the crown of the four immeasurables, the balance that allows compassion to remain boundless without burning out. The Taoist sage meets transformation, gain, and loss with the same calm face. To cultivate equanimity is to widen the container until it can hold the full catastrophe of life, and to discover the deep peace that does not depend on conditions.
