The mind beneath the mind

Ego

The ego is the constructed sense of "me," the mental self-image woven from memory, story, role, and identification with form. It is the voice that insists it is separate, defends its boundaries, and seeks completion in the future because it can never rest in what is. In the nondual teachings the ego is not an enemy to be slain but an illusion to be seen through, a case of mistaken identity in which awareness forgets its true nature and believes itself to be the small, time-bound character it observes.

The great liberators point past the ego to what watches it. You are not the body, not the mind, not the running commentary, but the awareness in which all of these appear. When the question "who am I?" is followed inward to its source, the separate self is found to have no real ground, and what remains is presence, peace, the I-am prior to every story. The dissolving of the ego's grip is not loss but homecoming, the end of the exile of feeling separate.
