The mind beneath the mind
Conditioning
Conditioning is the sum of the impressions, repetitions, and inherited patterns that have programmed the deeper mind without our consent. From earliest childhood, family, culture, and experience write their assumptions into us, and we mistake this borrowed programming for our true nature. No two minds carry the same imprints, the same conditioning, the same learning, so each of us lives in a separately conditioned reality, reacting not to life as it is but to life as we were trained to see it. What we call "just the way I am" is most often only the way we were conditioned to be.

The liberating insight is that what was programmed can be reprogrammed. Because the subconscious accepts what is repeatedly and feelingly impressed, the old conditioning can be overwritten by deliberate new suggestion, especially in the relaxed, receptive states where the deeper mind is most open. To decondition is to question the inherited assumptions, to see the programming as programming rather than self, and then to consciously install the patterns one chooses. Freedom begins the moment we realize the conditioning is not us.
