Sir John Woodroffe (Arthur Avalon)
Serpent Power / kundalini for the West
The transmission
Sir John Woodroffe (1865–1936) was a British High Court judge in Calcutta who, under the pen name Arthur Avalon, became the single most important transmitter of Hindu Tantra and kundalini doctrine to the West.
Working closely with Bengali pandits, he translated and annotated key Tantric texts, but his enduring landmark is The Serpent Power (1919), a translation and commentary on the Shatchakra Nirupana that introduced English readers to the systematic description of the chakras, the subtle channels (nadis), and the coiled feminine energy (kundalini-shakti) said to rest at the base of the spine and, when awakened, to rise through the centers to union with Shiva at the crown.
He did this at a time when Tantra was dismissed in both Victorian and reformist-Hindu circles as decadent, defending it as a serious, coherent spiritual science. For the mind-power lineage, Woodroffe is foundational because he is the principal source from which the subtle-body energy paradigm — chakras, nadis, kundalini, the rising of energy through the body — entered Western esoteric and, later, New Age vocabulary.
This is the direct ancestor of the now-ubiquitous “energy,” “vibration,” “raising your frequency,” and “chakra-clearing” language that mind-power and manifestation culture take for granted. By rendering Tantra’s map of consciousness-as-energy into accessible English, he supplied the conceptual hardware that Theosophists, occultists (and through them Jung, whose famous kundalini seminars relied on his work), and eventually the entire energy-healing field would build upon.
He thus stands at the gateway through which India’s tantric “consciousness-and-energy-are-one” metaphysics became a load-bearing component of Western mind-power.
What they gave
Brought kundalini and chakras to the West: The Serpent Power is the canonical English source for the subtle-body energy system now ubiquitous in mind-power and New Age thought.
- The energy/vibration ancestor: Supplied the original vocabulary of channels, centers, and rising energy underlying “raising your frequency” and “chakra work.”
- Defended Tantra as a science of consciousness: Reframed Tantra as a rigorous, coherent system of energy and awareness rather than mere superstition.
- Seeded Western esotericism and Jung: Provided the textual basis that Theosophy, occultism, and Jung’s kundalini psychology built upon.
The line they stand in
Influenced by: Bengali Shakta Tantra; Sanskrit Tantric texts (notably the Shatchakra Nirupana); his pandit collaborators; Shaivite and Shakta metaphysics.
- Influenced: Carl Jung’s kundalini seminars; Western occultism and Theosophy; the modern chakra/kundalini paradigm; and New Age subtle-body and energy/vibration thought.
