Henry Wood
Ideal Suggestion Through Mental Photography — visual affirmation cards
The transmission
Henry Wood (1834–1909) was an American businessman turned New Thought author who wrote roughly a dozen successful books on mental healing and metaphysics.
His most influential work, Ideal Suggestion Through Mental Photography (1893), is widely recognized as a pioneering book on auto-suggestion. Wood came to the field after his own recovery from nervous illness through mental means, and he wrote to make the healing method practical for use at home.
His distinctive and pivotal contribution was a concrete technique. Ideal Suggestion supplied printed cards, each bearing a healing affirmation in large type, which the reader was to gaze upon in stillness so the idea would be “photographed” upon the receptive mind — an early, physical method of impressing the subconscious through focused visual repetition.
This made him one of the first to translate the abstract claim that thought heals into a step-by-step practice anyone could perform, anticipating the affirmation cards, visualization drills, and auto-suggestion routines that run through the mind-power tradition to the present day.
What they gave
Mental photography: Devised the practice of gazing on a printed affirmation in stillness to impress it on the mind.
- Affirmation cards: Pioneered the physical affirmation-card method as a home self-treatment tool.
- Auto-suggestion in print: Authored one of the first practical books on auto-suggestion, predating Coué’s fame.
- Visualization technique: Operationalized the subconscious-impression theory into a repeatable visual exercise.
In their words
Thought always seeks embodiment. The thought of the engineer materializes in the completed engine, and that of the architect in the finished building.
The line they stand in
Influenced by: New Thought and the Quimby healing lineage; the broader mental-healing movement; Christian metaphysics.
- Influenced: auto-suggestion and affirmation-card practice; later New Thought self-help; visualization and subconscious-impression methods.
