Spiritual laws of the universe, illustrated

Hans Wilhelm (born 21 September 1945 in Bremen, Germany) is a German-American author, illustrator, and self-described mystic best known to general audiences as a children’s book creator and, later in life, as the creator of LIFEexplained.com.

After studying art and business he spent twelve years in South Africa working as a painter and member of a satirical theatre group, then embarked on a two-year journey around the world that launched his publishing career.

Over the following decades he wrote and illustrated more than 200 books for children and adults, including the enduring picture book I’ll Always Love You (1985), the Bunny Trouble and Tyrone the Horrible series, and several collaborations with Byron Katie.

His books have sold over 40 million copies and been translated into roughly thirty languages, with a number adapted into animated television series. In his later years Wilhelm turned to spiritual teaching through LIFEexplained.com, a free library of short, hand-illustrated videos that visually explain the spiritual laws of the universe, covering themes such as karma, reincarnation, forgiveness, gratitude, death and the afterlife, and the relationship between inner state and outer experience.

Presented as non-denominational and accessible to all, the videos have reached more than 20 million viewers worldwide. Wilhelm credits his late father as the inspiration for the project, framing the work as a continuation of a personal spiritual lineage.

The teachings sit squarely in the New Thought stream: thought, belief, and inner orientation are presented as causal forces that shape lived reality, with release and surrender as conditions for receiving.

LIFEexplained.com: Creates a free, illustrated video library (well over 130 short films) translating the spiritual laws of the universe into simple, visual form for a mainstream audience.

  • Mass-reach spiritual popularization: Brings New Thought-style teachings on belief, karma, and inner cause to more than 20 million viewers in a deliberately non-denominational register.
  • Picture-book legacy: Authors and illustrates 200+ books (40M+ copies, ~30 languages), most famously I’ll Always Love You, embedding themes of love, loss, and acceptance for young readers.
  • Collaboration with Byron Katie: Co-creates illustrated adaptations of inquiry-based work, including Tiger-Tiger, Is It True? and The Four Questions, bridging children’s storytelling and adult self-inquiry.

Hans Wilhelm presents his spiritual teaching as a continuation of a personal lineage rather than a formal school, naming his late father as the catalyst for the LIFEexplained.com project.

His framing of thought, belief, and inner orientation as causes of outer experience places him within the broad New Thought tradition popularized across the twentieth century, while his emphasis on karma, reincarnation, and non-denominational universalism reflects the eclectic perennialism common to modern internet-era spiritual teachers.

Through his collaboration with Byron Katie he is directly linked to inquiry-based self-examination, and his vast children’s-book output gives his ideas an unusually wide cultural footprint.

His own influence flows forward chiefly through the millions of online viewers who encounter the spiritual laws through his short illustrated videos.
