Recognition (pratyabhijna) of one’s own nature as the free, blissful Light of Consciousness

Christopher Wallis, who also teaches under the spiritual name Hareesh, is a contemporary American Sanskritist and scholar-practitioner of Classical Tantra, best known for his book Tantra Illuminated (2013), the first comprehensive and accessible English-language introduction to the nondual Shaiva Tantra of Kashmir.

Initiated by a traditional Indian guru at the age of sixteen and educated at yoga ashrams in India and the West, he went on to complete formal academic training in the field: a B.A. in Religion and Classics from the University of Rochester, an M.A. in South Asian Studies (Sanskrit) from U.C.

Berkeley, an M.Phil. in Classical Indian Religions from Oxford, and a Ph. D. in Sanskrit from U.C. Berkeley. This rare combination of decades of personal practice with rigorous philological scholarship allows him to read the original Sanskrit sources and render their contents in clear modern English.

Wallis works within the lineage of the great Kashmiri synthesizer Abhinavagupta, transmitting the Trika and Pratyabhijna (“Recognition”) teachings to a modern audience through Tantra Illuminated, his translation and commentary The Recognition Sutras (2017), and his myth-busting volumes Near Enemies of the Truth.

His relevance to the mind-power lineage lies in his careful articulation of the recognition doctrine: that liberation is not the attainment of something new but the direct recognition that one’s own awareness already is the single, free, blissful Consciousness that expresses itself as the whole of reality.

Through his teaching platforms Tantra Illuminated and the Mattamayura Institute, his writing at hareesh.org, and his lectures and courses, he has become one of the most influential living voices presenting nondual Tantra as a coherent path of self-recognition rather than as a system of mere techniques.

Tantra Illuminated (2013): Authored the first comprehensive, accessible English introduction to nondual Shaiva Tantra, grounding popular “Tantra” in its authentic classical sources.

  • The Recognition Sutras (2017): Translated and unpacked Kshemaraja’s Pratyabhijnahridayam, making the core Recognition teaching of self as universal Consciousness widely available.
  • Scholar-practitioner bridge: Combined Ph. D.-level Sanskrit philology with decades of initiated practice, correcting widespread misconceptions about Tantra.
  • Near Enemies of the Truth: Distinguished genuine nondual insight from its subtle counterfeits, sharpening contemporary spiritual discourse.
  • Teaching platforms: Founded Tantra Illuminated and heads the Mattamayura Institute, transmitting classical practice and Sanskrit study to a global online community.
Both thoughts and feelings are vibrations of citta, or the “mind-stuff.”
Tantra Illuminated (2013)
Briefly, the same powers of awareness that allow us to construct mental models of reality also allow us to see that they are mental models, and not reality itself.
The Recognition Sutras (2017)
Consciousness, out of its own free will, chooses particular roles to play out of the nearly infinite possibilities—and then naturally seeks to relinquish those roles to make space for new possibility.
The Recognition Sutras (2017)
The capacity to be the holiest of saints and the most heartless of killers exists within each of us.
The Recognition Sutras (2017)
The mind sees reality through the lens of māyā (that is, it sees things as fundamentally separate and differentiated) because its primary function is to produce discursive thought-forms, or vikalpas.
The Recognition Sutras (2017)
In the Tantrik View, there are two goals in human life: worldly success and spiritual liberation.
The Recognition Sutras (2017)

Christopher Wallis stands self-consciously within the nondual Shaiva Tantra lineage of Kashmir, drawing above all on Abhinavagupta and his student Kshemaraja, and on the foundational Pratyabhijna philosophers Utpaladeva and Somananda whose works he translates and teaches.

Initiated young by a traditional guru and trained academically under leading Western Sanskritists, he transmits these classical sources to contemporary practitioners, influencing the modern teaching of Tantra, the broader nondual and yoga communities, and a generation of students and teachers seeking the authentic philosophy behind popular Tantra.
