Lucid dreaming & the inner self
The transmission
Robert Waggoner (b. 1953) is an American author and a leading voice in advanced lucid-dreaming practice. A lucid dreamer since the 1970s, he became known for pushing past mere dream-control toward deeper questions about the nature of the dreaming mind itself.
He co-edits the Lucid Dreaming Experience magazine and has served in lucid-dream research and education organizations. His influential book Lucid Dreaming: Gateway to the Inner Self (2009) argued that the lucid dream is not simply a private mental movie to manipulate but an interactive space in which one can encounter a seemingly autonomous “awareness behind the dream.” This reframes lucidity as a means of dialogue with deeper layers of mind, drawing on currents from Seth and Castaneda as well as LaBerge’s science.
What they gave
Beyond dream control: Shifted emphasis from manipulating dream content to interacting with the awareness underlying the dream.
- The dream as interactive field: Frames lucidity as co-creative engagement rather than solitary willpower — relevant to reality-shifting models.
- Practical advanced techniques: Documented methods for stabilizing lucidity and questioning the dream itself.
- Experiential bridge: Links experimental lucid dreaming with consciousness-exploration traditions.
In their words
Fellow lucid dreamers I’ve met over the years seem to agree with me that the senses proclaimed each experience as real as waking experience. Yet, experienced lucid dreamers note that if they predetermine or expect what to feel or how to feel, they can alter the sensory experience in line with their expectations. In other words, “As you believe, so shall it be” is a powerful truth when lucid.
