Forgiveness as a shift in perception
The transmission
Colin Charles Tipping (born England, 30 September 1941; died Marietta, Georgia, 28 June 2019) was a British-American workshop leader, coach, and author who created Radical Forgiveness — a structured, repeatable method for releasing grievances by shifting one’s interpretation of the offending event rather than merely pardoning it.
He taught in England, emigrated to the United States in 1984, and with his wife JoAnn co-founded the Georgia Cancer Help Program and Together-We-Heal, later founding the Institute for Radical Forgiveness. His best-known book, Radical Forgiveness (first self-published 1997; revised Sounds True edition 2009), distilled the work into a five-stage process and a signature Radical Forgiveness Worksheet, and was followed by Radical Self-Forgiveness (2010) and several “Radical” extensions (Manifestation, Transformation).
Tipping’s place in the Atlas is as the systematizer who turned the New Thought / A Course in Miracles claim that “the outer mirrors the inner, and meaning is assigned not given” into a fill-in-the-blanks coaching tool anyone could run on a specific grievance.
Where Renard (ACIM) and ho’oponopono frame forgiveness in explicitly religious terms, Tipping packaged the same perceptual-shift move as a secular-sounding, process-driven worksheet — “tap into your Spiritual Intelligence, collapse the victim story, reframe the event as having served a purpose.” He sits at the practical-psychology edge of the library’s forgiveness cluster: the emotional-release and reframing mechanics are real and supported, while his “everything happens for a reason / there are no mistakes” metaphysics is the method’s belief, carrying a notable spiritual-bypassing risk that the Atlas flags explicitly.
What they gave
Radical Forgiveness as a method: Recast forgiveness from a moral act of pardon into a perceptual shift — changing the meaning assigned to an event so the victim story collapses.
- The five-stage process: Telling the Story → Feeling the Feelings → Collapsing the Story → Reframing → Integration — a clear, teachable map.
- The Radical Forgiveness Worksheet: A written, step-by-step tool (with “Fake It ’Til You Make It” willingness) that makes the inner shift concrete and repeatable on a named grievance.
- Radical Self-Forgiveness: Extended the same process inward to dissolve self-judgment, shame, and self-hatred — addressing the case where one is both victim and perpetrator.
The line they stand in
Taught by / Influenced by: New Thought (mind assigns meaning; outer mirrors inner); A Course in Miracles (forgiveness undoes a misperception, not a real offense); spiritual / transpersonal psychology.
- Taught / Influenced: the forgiveness-coaching movement; “everything happens for you, not to you” self-help culture; worksheet-driven inner-work formats.
