The transmission
Tilopa (c.988-1069) was the Indian mahasiddha (“great adept”) regarded as the human source of the Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism, traditionally said to have received teachings directly from the cosmic Buddha Vajradhara.
He transmitted the Mahamudra (“Great Seal”) teachings and the cluster of advanced practices later codified as the Six Yogas (including inner-heat, illusory body, dream, clear-light, and transference yogas).
His celebrated “Song of Mahamudra” points directly to the nature of mind: do not analyze, do not grasp, do not contrive—let awareness rest in its own natural, luminous, empty condition, and liberation is self-arising.
Mind left in its uncontrived state is already the awakened state. For the mind-power lineage, Tilopa is the fountainhead of the Tibetan yogic stream that treats consciousness as both the ground of reality and a trainable instrument.
His Mahamudra “rest in natural mind” is a direct ancestor of effortless-awareness and “do nothing” nondual teaching, while the Six Yogas he transmitted—especially dream yoga and illusory-body yoga—are the deep ancestors of modern lucid dreaming and reality-shifting practice, which treat waking and dreaming experience alike as malleable, mind-made appearance to be consciously navigated.
Through his disciple Naropa, these teachings passed to Marpa, Milarepa, and the whole Kagyu transmission that shaped Tibetan dream and sleep yoga.
