Mind can perceive distant targets

Ingo Douglass Swann (September 14, 1933 - January 31, 2013) was an American artist, author, and psychic research subject best known as a principal developer of remote viewing, the claimed ability to describe distant or unseen targets using the mind.

After early experiments at the American Society for Psychical Research in New York, where he is credited with coining the term “remote viewing” around 1971, Swann moved to the Stanford Research Institute (SRI), where from the early 1970s he worked with physicists Harold Puthoff and Russell Targ on perception experiments funded in part by U.S. government agencies.

He served as both architect and test subject for the protocols that became known as coordinate (later controlled) remote viewing. Swann’s most-cited demonstration was an April 27, 1973 SRI session in which he attempted to describe Jupiter from geographic-style coordinates, reporting a ring around the planet; admirers note this preceded confirmation of Jupiter’s faint ring system.

His work fed into the long-running U.S. military and intelligence remote-viewing effort later publicly known as the Stargate program. These claims are presented here as a sincere and unusually well-documented experiment in the powers attributed to mind; the evidential status of remote viewing remains scientifically contested and unproven.

Swann matters to the mind-power lineage as the figure who gave a structured, repeatable method - and an institutional, quasi-scientific setting - to the idea that consciousness is not bounded by distance.

Naming and framing remote viewing: He coined the term and helped reframe “travelling clairvoyance” as a testable laboratory protocol.

  • Coordinate / controlled remote viewing: He developed the staged methodology intended to discipline psychic impressions and reduce guessing.
  • Bridge to government research: His SRI work seeded the decades-long Stargate program, lending the topic unusual institutional weight.
  • A scientific posture for psi: He pushed psychic claims toward measurable, repeatable experiment rather than anecdote.

Influenced by: early ASPR experiments; his SRI collaboration with Harold Puthoff and Russell Targ; broad esoteric and Theosophical reading.

  • Influenced: the U.S. Stargate remote-viewing program, the coordinate/controlled remote-viewing method taught by later practitioners, and the wider field of experimental parapsychology.
