A Teacher
T. Subba Row
Brilliant Advaita lawyer who brought Vedantic depth to early Theosophy.
The transmission
Tallapragada Subba Row was a South Indian lawyer and Advaita Vedantist who became one of the earliest and most respected Indian Theosophists. Born at Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh, he met Helena Blavatsky and joined the Theosophical Society in 1882.
He is mentioned frequently in The Mahatma Letters and recommended the purchase of the Adyar property that became the Society’s headquarters.
What they gave
An acknowledged authority on Advaita esotericism, his Notes on the Bhagavad Gita, delivered at Adyar in 1886, remain his most celebrated work. The Society later named the Subba Row Medal in his honour.
The line they stand in
An early Indian member of the Theosophical Society and associate of Helena Blavatsky, he resigned in 1888 over disagreements regarding the publication of The Secret Doctrine.
