Faery / underworld descent

R.J. Stewart is a British composer, author, and teacher of the Western esoteric tradition who developed a distinctive body of faery and underworld magical practice.

Drawing on Scottish and Celtic lore—especially the 17th-century minister Robert Kirk’s account of the “secret commonwealth” of faery—along with Qabalistic and folk sources, Stewart elaborated techniques of underworld initiation: guided visionary descents into the inner earth and the realm of faery allies, conceived as a path of transformation and contact with non-human intelligences and ancestral powers.

Stewart’s contribution to the lineage is his development of descent-based visionary work, a counter-direction to the more familiar ascent models (the Golden Dawn’s “rising on the planes,” the mystical ladders of Teresa and the Sufis).

Where ascent traditions climb toward light and union, Stewart’s underworld descent goes downward and inward to confront and integrate the chthonic, ancestral, and instinctual—structurally akin to depth psychology’s descent into the unconscious and shadow (Jung, the night-sea journey).

His faery practice also exemplifies the use of richly imagined inner landscapes and allies as vehicles of transformation, extending the pathworking method into a distinctively Celtic, underworld register and feeding contemporary animistic and faery-craft currents.

Underworld descent: Developed downward/inward visionary initiation as a path of transformation.

  • Faery contact practice: Systematized inner-ally work drawn from Celtic lore.
  • Descent vs. ascent: Offered a chthonic counterpart to ascent-based consciousness maps.
  • Animistic pathworking: Extended guided visionary technique into Celtic/underworld terrain.

Taught by / Influenced by: the Western Mystery tradition; Scottish/Celtic faery lore (Robert Kirk); Qabalah and folk-magical sources.

  • Taught / Influenced: modern faery and underworld magical practice; visionary descent pathworking; Celtic-revival esotericism.
