The transmission
June Singer was an American Jungian analyst, trained in Zurich, whose Boundaries of the Soul: The Practice of Jung’s Psychology (1972) became one of the most widely used and accessible introductions to analytical psychology in practice.
Written for the educated general reader, it walked through the actual experience of Jungian analysis—dreams, complexes, the shadow, individuation—grounding abstract theory in the lived process of inner work. She also wrote on androgyny as a psychological and spiritual ideal (Androgyny) and on the religious imagination, drawing on Gnostic sources and the visionary poet William Blake.
Singer’s role in the lineage is as a clear integrator and popularizer who made the Jungian path practicable for non-specialists while preserving its depth. Her emphasis on individuation as a lived, lifelong process of integrating unconscious material connects depth psychology to the broad self-development culture that feeds modern spirituality.
Her work on androgyny—the union of masculine and feminine within the psyche—also resonates with the alchemical coniunctio and the recurring “union of opposites” motif found across this Atlas (from Cusa’s coincidence of opposites to alchemical symbolism), framing psychological wholeness as the reconciliation of inner polarities.
