The transmission
Florence Scovel Shinn (1871–1940) was an American artist and book illustrator who became a New Thought teacher and metaphysical practitioner in New York City.
Working outside the formal institutions of the movement, she taught informally and self-published The Game of Life and How to Play It (1925) when conventional publishers declined it; the book’s plain, anecdote-driven, almost folksy style—full of short case stories from her practice—made it unusually accessible and gave it enduring popular life.
Shinn’s distinctive contribution to reality-creation mechanics was her treatment of life as an objective, rule-governed system—a “game” with discoverable laws—rather than a struggle or a mystery. Her signature mechanism was the “spoken word”: the affirmation or denial uttered aloud as a precise, almost legal decree that sets law in motion, which she paired with the principle of non-resistance (refusing to fight conditions, since opposition energizes them).
This reframing—affirmation as exact energetic command, plus strategic non-resistance and the casting of “burdens”—turned manifestation into a set of operable rules and made her one of the most directly imitated sources for later affirmation teachers, most notably Louise Hay.
What they gave
The spoken word as decree: Treats the verbalized affirmation/denial as a precise energetic command that activates law—affirmation given near-legal force.
- Life as an objective game: Reframes existence as a rule-governed system with discoverable laws, replacing struggle with skillful play.
- Non-resistance: Establishes that opposing or fighting conditions energizes them, so release and non-resistance are operative techniques.
- Casting the burden: Provides a concrete method for handing over anxiety/over-effort to the “superconscious,” prefiguring “let go” manifestation steps.
In their words
Whatever man feels deeply or images clearly is impressed upon the subconscious mind, and carried out in minutest detail.
