Predictive processing; ‘controlled hallucination’

Anil Seth (1972–present) is a British neuroscientist (University of Sussex) and a leading researcher and public communicator on the science of consciousness.

His book Being You (2021) advances a predictive-processing account in which the brain is a prediction machine and perception is a “controlled hallucination” — the brain’s best guess about the causes of its sensory input, constrained by reality.

Crucially, Seth extends this to the perceiving self: our sense of being a unified self is itself a constructed prediction, grounded in interoception (the brain’s modeling of the body’s internal state) and the imperative to keep the organism alive.

Seth is included in this idealism-adjacent folder mainly as a counterweight and boundary case: he uses the same vocabulary — “you don’t perceive reality directly,” “perception is a construction” — that idealist and manifestation writers exploit, but he reaches the opposite conclusion.

For Seth, the brain constructs experience of a real external world; consciousness is a biological phenomenon to be explained by neuroscience, not evidence that mind creates reality. He is explicitly skeptical of panpsychism, IIT’s strong claims, and any leap from “perception is constructed” to “reality is mind-dependent” or manifestation.

Tier: legitimate-science; a key skeptical anchor against mind-power overreach.

“Controlled hallucination”: A phrase widely misquoted to support “reality is illusion / you create it,” which Seth explicitly rejects.

  • Constructed self: Shows the self is a brain model — relevant to ego/no-self discourse without endorsing manifestation.
  • Skeptical boundary: Demonstrates that “perception is constructed” does not entail idealism, correcting a common manifestation fallacy.
  • Biological naturalism: Argues consciousness is explainable as a physical/biological process, countering consciousness-first claims.
Perceptions do not come from the bottom up or the outside in, they come primarily from the top down, or the inside out.
Being You: A New Science of Consciousness (2021)
the contents of consciousness are a kind of waking dream—a controlled hallucination—that is both more than and less than whatever the real world really is.
