The Teachers
A Teacher
Will Schutz
Made encounter groups and radical honesty synonymous with Esalen.
The transmission
William C. Schutz was an American psychologist and a pioneer of the 1960s encounter group movement. He developed the Fundamental Interpersonal Relations Orientation (FIRO) theory in 1958 and the FIRO-B measuring instrument. He lived at the Esalen Institute from 1967 to 1973, where his work made encounter groups widely identified with the institute.
What they gave
He created FIRO theory and the FIRO-B assessment, and later developed The Human Element, applying his ideas to organizations.
The line they stand in
His residency at the Esalen Institute placed him at the center of the encounter-group era of the Human Potential Movement.
