No separate self that authors experience

Robert Saltzman is an American psychotherapist, photographer, and author associated with the contemporary “radical nonduality” current. After a long career as an artist and clinician, he became known in nondual circles through his writing and online dialogues, eventually settling in Todos Santos, Mexico.

He approaches questions of self and consciousness without affiliating to a particular spiritual tradition or guru lineage, presenting himself as an ordinary person reporting honestly on direct experience rather than as an enlightened teacher.

His first book, The Ten Thousand Things (2017), was received in nondual circles as a frank, unsentimental account of awareness and the absence of a separate, controlling self; he followed it with Depending on No-Thing (2019), an extended dialogue continuing those themes.

Saltzman is notable for a skeptical, often critical stance toward popular spirituality and conventional advaita, insisting on candor about uncertainty and on the limits of any teaching. His position is broadly that there is no separate self standing apart from and authoring experience, and that clear seeing of this does not produce a permanent special state but rather an honest relationship with life as it actually unfolds.

No separate author of experience: Articulates the radical-nondual view that the felt sense of a self in control is a construction, not a doer behind thought and action.

  • Honesty over attainment: Reframes “awakening” away from special states or guru authority toward candid, ongoing observation of experience.
  • Critique of spiritual marketing: Challenges idealized advaita and manifestation claims, foregrounding uncertainty and lived ambiguity.
  • Psychotherapeutic grounding: Brings a clinician’s attention to mind and self-image into nondual inquiry, keeping it concrete and experiential.
In the eyes of the world Robert may be a person, but to myself I am not a person, but a happening, a stream of consciousness over which I have no control. We are all like that, but not all of us know it.
The Ten Thousand Things (2017)
The aliveness is the meaning.
The Ten Thousand Things (2017)
The ‘I’ who is replying to questions here is not a ‘person’ at all, which is really only a legal and social designation, but an undeniable, unrestrained flow of perceptions, feelings, and thoughts. That flow is not happening to me. That flow is me.
The Ten Thousand Things (2017)
We are lost in a fantasy of separation in which I am ‘in here’ while the world I see—the ten thousand things—is ‘out there.’ It is from that confusion that one awakens.
The Ten Thousand Things (2017)
Like everything else, ‘myself’ is always changing, and so the understandings of this moment may be outshone in the next by a clearer vision, or may even appear to have been only a misunderstanding.
The Ten Thousand Things (2017)
For me, an apparent personal self is still present, but has lost the authority of its judgments, certainties and pet beliefs.
The Ten Thousand Things (2017)
In each moment, things simply are as they are, whether “I” like it or not.
The Ten Thousand Things (2017)

Influenced by: nondual and advaitic inquiry, radical-nonduality currents, and his own decades of psychotherapeutic practice and self-observation.

  • Influenced: contemporary readers and the online nondual community drawn to a skeptical, non-guru framing of selflessness.
