A Teacher
Ida Rolf
A biochemist who taught that realigning the body could realign the self.
The transmission
Ida Pauline Rolf was an American biochemist who earned her PhD from Columbia University in 1920 and worked at the Rockefeller Institute. She developed Structural Integration, later known as Rolfing, a method of manipulating the body’s connective tissue to realign posture and structure. In the mid-1960s she began teaching her method at the Esalen Institute.
What they gave
She created Structural Integration and authored Rolfing: The Integration of Human Structures (1977), founding the Rolf Institute of Structural Integration in 1971.
The line they stand in
Her work was consolidated under the Rolf Institute of Structural Integration; her teaching at the Esalen Institute spread her bodywork across the human-potential community.
