Theodor Reuss

1855–1923 Ceremonial Magick Ordo Templi Orientis

The occultist who built the O.T.O. and recruited Aleister Crowley.

Theodor Reuss was an Anglo-German occultist, journalist, and singer who became a Freemason in 1876. Around 1895 he began discussing the formation of Ordo Templi Orientis with Carl Kellner, and the order’s origins trace to Kellner, Reuss, Heinrich Klein, and Franz Hartmann. Reuss served as Outer Head of the Order from 1905 until 1923.

He organized and led the Ordo Templi Orientis, synthesizing Masonic and esoteric currents into its degree system, and recruited Aleister Crowley into the order.

As co-founder and Outer Head of Ordo Templi Orientis, he passed leadership and authority that Crowley would later carry forward.
