Harmonic Wealth across the dimensions of life
The transmission
James Arthur Ray was born in 1957. A former telemarketer turned motivational speaker, he rose to prominence as one of the teachers featured in The Secret (2006), the documentary and book that popularised the “law of attraction.” On the strength of that exposure he built a large personal-development business, ran high-priced seminars, and published the bestseller Harmonic Wealth (2008), which argued that true wealth requires harmony across the financial, relational, mental, physical, and spiritual dimensions of life.
In October 2009, three participants, Kirby Brown, James Shore, and Liz Newman, died following a sweat-lodge ceremony Ray led near Sedona, Arizona, as the culmination of a five-day “Spiritual Warrior” retreat; others were hospitalised.
Ray was charged and, in 2011, convicted of three counts of negligent homicide; he served roughly two years in prison. These deaths are a serious matter and are recorded here plainly: whatever the appeal of his teaching, real people lost their lives in an event he organised and led, and that fact belongs in any honest account of his work.
Ray later attempted to resume his career. He died in January 2025 at the age of 67.
