The phase — a unified out-of-body / lucid-dream state entered by technique
The transmission
Michael Raduga is a Russian-born researcher and author who founded the School of Out-of-Body Travel (later the OOBE Research Center / Phase Research Center) and has practiced dissociative states of consciousness since adolescence.
His central move was to discard the loaded vocabularies of “astral projection,” “lucid dreaming,” and “out-of-body experience” and unify them under a single neutral term, the phase, treating them as one underlying brain state reachable by deliberate technique rather than by belief.
His best-known works are School of Out-of-Body Travel: A Practical Guidebook and The Phase: Shattering the Illusion of Reality, and he is the author of roughly fifteen books on sleep-related topics translated into many languages.
Raduga matters to the mind-power lineage as the figure who pushed OBE/lucid-dream practice toward a deliberately empirical, technique-first framing. He emphasizes high-success entry methods practiced on awakening and treats the phase as a navigable laboratory of mind.
More recently he founded REMspace, a California-based venture researching technologies for lucid dreaming, REM sleep, and sleep paralysis, and his studies have appeared in peer-reviewed venues such as Sleep Science, Medical Hypotheses, and Dreaming.
He thus straddles the experiential-practitioner world and an attempt at scientific legitimation.
What they gave
The “phase” reframe: Unified OBE, lucid dreaming, and astral projection into one technique-accessible state, stripped of metaphysical commitment.
- High-yield entry techniques: Systematized indirect methods (cycles of techniques on awakening) aimed at reliable, repeatable phase entry.
- Belief-agnostic practice: Positioned the phase as something to be tested by anyone rather than taken on faith, lowering the barrier to first-hand experience.
- Toward instrumentation: Through REMspace, pursued measurable, technology-assisted lucid-dream and REM research.
In their words
Now, this phenomenon is accessible to everyone, regardless of their worldview.
The line they stand in
Influenced by: Robert Monroe’s OBE work; Stephen LaBerge’s lucid-dream science; the older astral-projection tradition (e.g., Muldoon).
- Influenced: contemporary OBE and lucid-dream practitioners; lucid-dreaming technology research; the experiential side of reality-shifting culture.
