The Teachers

A Teacher

Richard Price

1930–1985 Transpersonal Psychology Human Potential Movement

Co-founded Esalen and made Big Sur a crucible for human potential.

Richard Price was an American psychotherapist who co-founded the Esalen Institute with Michael Murphy in 1962.

A student of Fritz Perls, he developed his own approach known as Gestalt Practice in the 1970s and early 1980s. He provided the institute’s core operational and community direction from its Big Sur base until his death in 1985.

He shaped Esalen’s experiential ethos and developed Gestalt Practice, a meditative reworking of Gestalt therapy emphasizing awareness over leader intervention.

With Michael Murphy he founded the Esalen Institute, which he helped guide for over two decades and which hosted teachers such as Ida Rolf and Fritz Perls.
