Fritz-Albert Popp
Biophotons, cellular light communication
The transmission
Fritz-Albert Popp (1938–2018) was a German biophysicist best known for research on biophotons — the ultra-weak emission of light by living cells.
The underlying phenomenon is real and measurable: cells do emit very low-level photons, largely as a byproduct of oxidative metabolism, and this is an accepted area of mainstream biophysics. Popp’s distinctive and far more contested claim was that these emissions are coherent (laser-like), stored and regulated by DNA, and constitute a primary information and communication system coordinating the organism — effectively a “light-based” control layer beneath biochemistry.
The mainstream assessment is that ultra-weak photon emission exists but Popp’s interpretation — coherence, DNA as a photon store, biophotons as a holistic regulatory network — is not established and remains a fringe position.
His work became foundational for energy-medicine and biofield movements, which present biophotons as scientific proof that the body is governed by subtle “energy” and “light,” and by extension that thought, intention, and “vibration” can act on this field.
That extrapolation is unsupported. Popp himself worked within an institutional biophysics setting (he founded the International Institute of Biophysics), so his case illustrates how a real but modest phenomenon gets inflated into a mind-power mechanism.
What they gave
Biophotons: Provided a real, measurable cellular light emission later used to ground “the body is energy/light” claims.
- Coherence hypothesis: Claimed biophoton coherence and DNA storage — a contested basis for holistic “information field” theories.
- Energy-medicine foundation: His framework underpins biofield, light-healing, and “vibrational” intention-medicine narratives.
- Scientific veneer: Institutional biophysics credentials lend authority to extrapolations he did not empirically demonstrate.
The line they stand in
Influenced by: Quantum optics and biophysics; Alexander Gurwitsch’s early “mitogenetic radiation” work.
- Influenced: Mae-Wan Ho (coherence/liquid-crystal biology); energy-medicine and biofield practitioners; “vibrational” and frequency-healing discourse.
