Freedom is here and now

Hariwansh Lal Poonja (born 13 October 1910 in Gujranwala, in the western Punjab of British India, now in Pakistan) was an Indian sage known to his devotees as “Poonjaji” or, affectionately, “Papaji.” He was raised in a family of Saraswat Brahmins; the spiritual teacher Swami Rama Tirtha was his maternal uncle.

From childhood he combined intense devotion to Krishna with a hunger for direct experience of the divine, and as a young man he searched widely among teachers and practices without finding lasting satisfaction. In 1944, during a period of intense seeking, he travelled to Tiruvannamalai and met the sage Ramana Maharshi, whose silent presence and pointing toward the Self catalysed his decisive realisation.

He remained connected to the ashram in the following years and, after the 1947 Partition, moved his family to safety and settled in Lucknow, where he lived for decades as a householder while quietly guiding seekers.

In the late 1980s and 1990s, Poonja became the central post-Ramana bridge between the Indian Advaita tradition and the West. Thousands of Western seekers travelled to his satsangs in Lucknow, where he taught a direct, uncompromising message: freedom is already the case, here and now, and is recognised through self-enquiry and quietness rather than acquired through ritual or prolonged practice.

His students carried this transmission outward, seeding much of the contemporary satsang and “neo-Advaita” scene. He died in Lucknow on 6 September 1997; his three-volume biography by his student David Godman, Nothing Ever Happened, appeared in 1998.

Direct pointing to present freedom: Insisted that liberation is not a future attainment but the ever-present reality, recognised by turning attention to its own source.

  • Self-enquiry as the essential method: Carried Ramana’s “Who am I?” enquiry into a living, conversational transmission for a global audience.
  • The satsang bridge to the West: Drew thousands of Western seekers to Lucknow, becoming the pivotal link between Ramana’s lineage and the modern nondual movement.
  • Stillness over technique: Emphasised quietness and the dropping of the seeking effort, rather than the accumulation of practices, as the doorway to recognition.
The thought, “I want to be free” is itself free. This thought will take you to freedom.
Wake Up and Roar (1992)
When mind is quiet, all is Self. When mind moves the world arises. So be Still, throw away everything and be Free.
The Truth Is (2000), p. 244
If you see the illusion you are enlightened, but if you think that you are enlightened you are in the illusion!
The Truth Is (2000), p. 210
Whatever comes, let it come. What stays, let it stay. What goes, let it go.
The Truth Is (2000), p. 455
Always remember: The thieves of Peace are thieves in an empty house because only imagination suffers. You are Peace, that which remains Untouched.
The Truth Is (2000), p. 361
Surrounded by nothingness you have to do nothing. You have to do nothing to be who you are. Nothing at all.
Wake Up and Roar: Satsang With H.W.L. Poonja, Vol. 1
It is the freedom from desire that gives you happiness.
Wake Up and Roar: Satsang With H.W.L. Poonja, Vol. 1
To get rid of everything is freedom. Everything that you do suggests ‘Get rid of me.’ To get rid of desires is freedom, freedom from the function of the mind.
Wake Up and Roar: Satsang With H.W.L. Poonja, Vol. 1
Look here and know who you are. Instantly you will find freedom, and this suffering—hitchhiking from womb to womb—will instantly stop. The only way is to look within.
