Transformation of the Lower Self
The transmission
Eva Pierrakos (born Eva Broch, 1915–1979) was the founder of The Pathwork, a detailed system of spiritual psychology that maps the journey from the defended, false self to the loving “Godself” (higher self).
From 1957 until her death in 1979 she delivered—by her own account—a series of 258 “Guide Lectures”: material she stated she received as a channel for a spiritual entity known only as “the Guide.” The lectures, later edited into books such as The Pathwork of Self-Transformation (1990) and Fear No Evil, lay out a precise, demanding method of self-examination centered on three layers of the personality: the higher self (the divine, loving core), the lower self (the denied negativity, cruelty, and destructiveness within), and the mask self / idealized self-image (the false persona built to win love and avoid pain).
She married the psychiatrist John Pierrakos, co-founder of Bioenergetic Analysis, who fused her Pathwork map with Reichian body work to create Core Energetics (Institute founded 1973).
Eva Pierrakos’s place in the Atlas is as the originator of a rigorous, shadow-facing spiritual psychology that—unusually for the New Thought–adjacent field—insists on honestly meeting one’s negativity rather than affirming it away.
Her framework (mask / lower self / higher self) is a direct lineage source for Core Energetics and for the wider current of spiritual-psychology integration. Her teaching is presented here neutrally: the practical self-examination methods stand on their own as recognisable shadow and self-honesty work, while the cosmology in which they are embedded came, on her own account, via the channeled “Guide” lectures—a framing the reader can hold as belief rather than established fact.
What they gave
The Pathwork map of the self: Articulated the mask / lower self / higher self structure as a practical path of transformation.
- Facing the lower self: Made the honest, non-condemning ownership of one’s own negativity central to spiritual growth—“fear no evil,” go through it.
- Seeing through the idealized self-image: Named the false “mask” persona and the pride, self-will, and fear beneath it.
- The no-current / yes-current: Framed transformation as dissolving the inner “no” to life and consciously consenting to feeling, pleasure, and the life force.
The line they stand in
Taught by / Influenced by: depth psychology; the channeled “Pathwork Guide” lectures (her stated source).
- Taught / Influenced: Core Energetics (John Pierrakos); the broader spiritual-psychology integration movement.
