Conscious self-experimentation and alignment with truth-love-power

Steve Pavlina (b. April 14, 1971, Los Angeles) is an American self-help author, speaker, and one of the most-read personal-development bloggers of the 2000s.

A former independent computer-game developer (he founded Dexterity Software and served as president of the Association of Software Professionals), he launched StevePavlina.com in 2004, framed as “Personal Development for Smart People.” The site went on to draw well over 100 million visitors and host more than 1,800 articles spanning productivity, motivation, goal-setting, career and money, relationships, consciousness, courage, and spirituality.

His 2008 book, Personal Development for Smart People: The Conscious Pursuit of Personal Growth (Hay House), distilled his approach into a framework of universal growth principles. Pavlina occupies a distinctive place in this Atlas because his work straddles two normally separate camps.

On one side he is an evidence-friendly productivity writer whose signature contributions—most famously the 30-day trial—are pragmatic, behaviorally sound, and widely adopted across the habit-change world (echoed by writers like Scott H.

Young and the later habit-science cluster of Clear, Fogg, and Duhigg). On the other side he is an explicit explorer of speculative metaphysics: he openly adopted a “subjective reality” worldview and wrote extensively about the Law of Attraction and intention-manifestation, while himself treating these as a chosen lens or perspective rather than a proven law.

He is best understood as a self-experimenter who tests ideas on himself for fixed periods and reports the results—keeping what works, dropping what doesn’t—and who is candid that his more far-reaching claims (e.g., manifesting money, polyphasic sleep) are personal experiments, not established science.

The Atlas represents him faithfully across both registers: behaviorally grounded where he is grounded, and clearly flagged as speculative where he is speculative.

The 30-day trial: His signature, widely-copied method—commit to a new habit for just 30 days (temporary, not forever), then keep, drop, or adjust. A low-resistance, behaviorally sound on-ramp to habit change.

  • Truth, Love & Power: A compact alignment framework (from PD for Smart People)—evaluate any area of life against seeing clearly (Truth), connection (Love), and effective action (Power), and correct where you’re out of alignment.
  • Conscious self-experimentation: Modeled a “test it on yourself and judge by your own results” ethos rather than accepting received advice.
  • Subjective-reality / intention exploration: Popularized a Law-of-Attraction-adjacent practice of setting intentions and releasing inner resistance—rendered here neutrally, with honest caveats about its speculative status.
We primarily grow as human beings by discovering new truths about ourselves and our reality.

Taught by / Influenced by: New Thought and the Law of Attraction stream; productivity and habit-formation science; subjective-reality philosophy (the view that one’s experienced reality is, in some sense, one’s own creation).

  • Taught / Influenced: the personal-development blogging movement of the 2000s–2010s; the popular adoption of fixed-period habit “trials” as a self-change tool.
