Reconnecting wounded self, loving adult, and higher guidance

Margaret Paul (born 1939) is an American psychologist, psychotherapist, and relationship counselor best known as the co-creator, with Dr. Erika J. Chopich, of the self-healing process called Inner Bonding.

Holding a doctorate in psychology and decades of clinical practice, Paul came to prominence first as co-author (with Jordan Paul) of the relationship classic Do I Have to Give Up Me to Be Loved by You? (1983), then turned toward the inner roots of the relational patterns she was seeing in couples.

With Chopich she developed Inner Bonding over many years and set it out in Healing Your Aloneness (1990) and, in its fullest single-author statement, Inner Bonding: Becoming a Loving Adult to Your Inner Child (HarperSanFrancisco, 1992).

She has since built innerbonding.com into a teaching organization with online courses, a certification program, and further books and workbooks. Inner Bonding is Paul’s attempt to make inner-child healing into a concrete, repeatable daily practice rather than a one-time insight.

Its core map is a three-way relationship inside the person: a “wounded self” (the shame-based ego that learned in childhood to control, avoid, or numb pain), a “loving Adult” (a present, compassionate, responsible part that can choose to feel and to learn), and a source of “higher guidance” (a wiser, loving inner or spiritual resource).

Healing, in this model, is the loving Adult turning toward the wounded inner child with compassion instead of abandonment, discovering the false beliefs driving the pain, consulting higher guidance for the truth and the loving action, and then taking that action.

Within the Atlas, Paul anchors the practical, devotional end of the inner-child / parts-work thread: she sits alongside Schwartz’s IFS and Assagioli’s subpersonality work as a parts-relational model, but distinctively folds an explicit spiritual “guidance” step into an everyday self-parenting protocol.

Co-created Inner Bonding: With Erika Chopich, developed a structured six-step self-healing process for relating to one’s own inner child and feelings.

  • The wounded self / loving Adult / higher guidance map: Articulated inner conflict as a relationship between a protective wounded ego, a compassionate adult, and a wiser source of guidance.
  • Intent to learn vs. intent to protect: Named the pivotal moment-to-moment choice between trying to control or avoid pain and opening, with love, to learn from it.
  • Self-abandonment and self-parenting: Reframed much emotional suffering as self-abandonment, and healing as learning to “reparent” oneself through daily practice.
However, when we recognize our feelings and are willing to experience them, we have chosen the intent to love and to learn about ourselves. Then our Adult is connected with our Inner Child.
Inner Bonding: Becoming a Loving Adult to Your Inner Child
INNER BONDING is built upon the concept of intent. Our intent is our deepest desire, our primary motivation. There are only two possible intents we can have in any given moment: the intent to protect ourselves from pain or the intent to learn about loving.
What is Inner Bonding? (innerbonding.com)
We cannot experience deep spiritual connection until we love ourselves, but we cannot love ourselves until we experience the love that comes from a deep spiritual connection. In other words, love of self — which is what Divine love teaches us — is a prerequisite to self-growth.
What is Inner Bonding? (innerbonding.com)
It provides a much-needed process for moving out of fear and into love, out of the need to control and into trust so you can weather the storms of everyday life and embrace the sacred privilege of life on this planet.
What is Inner Bonding? (innerbonding.com)
Our culture operates on the earthly premise that joy is found in avoiding pain and seeking pleasure. When we shift to the spiritual perspective, we operate from the premise that true peace and joy come from an intent to be a loving human being.
