Tarot as occult mechanism

Papus, the pen name of the Spanish-born French physician Gérard Encausse, was a central organizer of the late-19th-century French occult revival. A prolific author and tireless founder of orders, he revived the Martinist Order and was involved in numerous esoteric and Rosicrucian societies.

His most influential book, The Tarot of the Bohemians (1889), presented the Tarot not as a game or simple divination deck but as a complete symbolic system—an “occult mechanism” encoding Kabbalistic, numerological, and Hermetic correspondences that mirror the structure of the cosmos and can be used as an instrument of knowledge and contemplation.

Papus’s contribution to the lineage is his systematic framing of the Tarot as a structured map of universal principles—a portable symbolic technology. Building on Lévi’s Tarot–Kabbalah linkage, he helped establish the modern conception of the Tarot as a tool for accessing hidden correspondences and inner states, a use that persists from ceremonial magic through to contemporary tarot-based self-reflection and even AI tarot (in the AI-spirituality node).

His organizational work also exemplifies the period’s drive to embed esoteric knowledge in initiatory orders. Papus thus connects the symbolic-correspondence stream (the “symbolic universe” archetype) to a concrete, widely-transmitted divinatory and contemplative practice.
