Conscious connected breathing to release birth and life trauma
The transmission
Leonard D. Orr (born 15 November 1937, died 5 September 2019) was an American spiritual teacher and breathwork pioneer, widely regarded as the founder of Rebirthing-Breathwork. Beginning in the early 1960s and developing through the 1970s, he arrived at his method partly by accident, using warm-water immersion to evoke and re-experience early memories, including the trauma of birth.
From this he developed “connected breathing,” in which inhalation and exhalation are merged into a continuous rhythm with no pause, intended to surface and release suppressed material held in body and mind. Orr matters to the mind-power lineage as a key bridge between the Human Potential Movement and the somatic, breath-based wing of transpersonal practice.
He held that much adult suffering is rooted in unconscious impressions laid down at and before birth, and that conscious breathing, combined with affirmations and a positive thought discipline, could re-pattern those impressions.
He travelled widely, taught on six continents, and authored numerous books spreading the practice internationally. Some of his teaching extended into contested claims (including ideas about “physical immortality”), which sit outside scientific consensus; presented faithfully, his enduring contribution is the disciplined use of the breath as a tool for emotional release and self-transformation.
What they gave
Founding Rebirthing-Breathwork: Originated and named a structured breath practice aimed at releasing birth and early-life trauma.
- Connected breathing technique: Developed the continuous, pause-free inhale-exhale rhythm that defines the method.
- Breath plus affirmation: Paired somatic breathwork with affirmations and positive thought, linking body-based release to mental re-patterning.
- Global dissemination: Through decades of teaching and many books, seeded an international breathwork community that continues today.
In their words
Breathing is totally harmless, but the human mind is not.
Every time we sit through an urgency barrier we get a fantastic realization about ourselves, and we learn about another program that is controlling us.
My approach to both physical and mental symptoms is to not fight them, but to surrender to them totally and to allow the Eternal Spirit to wash them out of my body and soul forever.
Disease and relaxation cannot both exist in the same space and time.
Mind, earth, air, water, fire and human love are the ultimate healers for the individual human being, and for the planet.
You can become immortal in one second. It is easy to become immortal, but the trick is to stay immortal.
Breathing energy is a direct intuitive experience of God.
The line they stand in
Influenced by: the Human Potential Movement; Eastern breath and yoga traditions; and his own spontaneous “rebirthing” experiences that he then systematised.
- Influenced: Sondra Ray, his foremost collaborator and co-teacher, and the worldwide Rebirthing-Breathwork and broader breathwork movements.
