The soul’s existence between incarnations
The transmission
Michael Newton (1931–2016) was an American hypnotherapist and counselor who developed and popularised “Life Between Lives” (LBL) regression. Trained in counseling psychology and certified as a master hypnotherapist, he reported that while using deep hypnosis with clients he stumbled onto consistent accounts not of past lives but of the interval between lives—the soul’s experience after one death and before the next birth.
He compiled these sessions into Journey of Souls (1994), drawing on the recollections of clients under hypnosis, followed by Destiny of Souls (2000). Journey of Souls became one of his publisher’s best-selling titles.
Newton matters to the mind-power lineage as a systematiser of the survival hypothesis in therapeutic form. Across many independent clients he claimed to find a strikingly consistent cartography of the after-death realm: a homecoming to soul groups, encounters with guides, life review, and—crucially—the soul’s deliberate choice of its next incarnation and life lessons.
Whatever one makes of the evidential status of hypnotic recall, his model squarely teaches that death is not the end, that the soul exercises free will in choosing its path, and that the purpose of incarnation is growth through lived experience.
He institutionalised the method through the training body now known as the Newton Institute. (Tradition tagged quantum consciousness as the closest controlled fit for a consciousness-survives-death framework; the material is equally adjacent to channeling/regression.)
What they gave
Life Between Lives regression: Defined and popularised a hypnotic method aimed at the soul’s inter-life state rather than past lives.
- A consistent map of the afterlife: Reported convergent client accounts of soul groups, guides, and life review, presented as cross-corroborating data.
- Soul choice and purpose: Centered the claim that souls freely select their incarnations and lessons, framing earthly life as chosen experience for growth.
- A trained lineage: Established a formal practitioner-training institute, propagating the method internationally.
The line they stand in
Influenced by: The past-life regression tradition; clinical hypnotherapy; the reincarnation and soul-purpose themes of figures like Edgar Cayce.
- Influenced: The Newton Institute for Life Between Lives; a worldwide community of between-lives regression practitioners.
