The transmission
Jeremy Narby is a Canadian-Swiss anthropologist who lived among the Ashaninca people of the Peruvian Amazon and became known for his book The Cosmic Serpent: DNA and the Origins of Knowledge (1998).
In it he advanced a striking hypothesis: that the serpent imagery recurring in ayahuasca visions across cultures might reflect, at some level, knowledge of DNA itself, and that shamans, in altered states, may access biomolecular information.
His later books Intelligence in Nature and Plant Teachers extended his interest in non-human intelligence and indigenous epistemology. Narby’s role in the mind-power lineage is as a sophisticated but explicitly speculative bridge between molecular biology and shamanic claims of plant-derived knowledge.
His DNA hypothesis is provocative analogy, not established science—he frames it as a hypothesis worth investigating rather than a demonstrated fact—and mainstream biology does not support it. Its importance here is memetic: it gave entheogenic spirituality a seductive, science-flavored narrative that altered states grant access to information beyond ordinary perception, reinforcing the consciousness-first and “intelligence in nature” themes that run through plant-medicine culture. It should be read as imaginative interdisciplinary speculation, not evidence.
What they gave
DNA-shamanism hypothesis: Proposed that ayahuasca visions may relate to molecular knowledge, a vivid science-adjacent narrative. - Intelligence in nature: Advanced the idea of non-human and botanical intelligence, feeding animist consciousness discourse.
- Memetic bridge: Supplied entheogenic culture a compelling but unverified science-flavored story. (Note: the DNA thesis is speculative and unsupported by mainstream biology.)
