Biography becomes biology in the body’s energy centres

Caroline Myss (born 2 December 1952) is an American author and speaker who describes herself as a “medical intuitive” and mystic. Born in Chicago and raised in nearby Melrose Park, Illinois, she earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism (1974) and a master’s in theology (1979) before beginning, in 1982, to give what she calls medical-intuitive readings — claimed assessments of a person’s physical and emotional condition from their “energy.” She collaborated for years with the neurosurgeon C.

Norman Shealy, and rose to wide prominence with her 1996 book Anatomy of the Spirit: The Seven Stages of Power and Healing, a New York Times bestseller translated into many languages. The framework of Anatomy of the Spirit synthesises three traditions — the Hindu chakras, the Christian sacraments, and the Kabbalistic Tree of Life — into a single model of seven “centres of spiritual and physical power,” and advances her signature claim that “your biography becomes your biology”: that emotional and spiritual wounds lodge in specific energy centres and surface as illness.

Her later work, including Sacred Contracts (2002), develops a system of twelve guiding archetypes. The mechanism Myss proposes — readable energy centres in which life history is stored and from which disease arises — has no accepted scientific basis, and medical-intuitive diagnosis is unverified.

What her work does carry meaningfully is the genuine link between emotional life and physical wellbeing, presented through a symbolic and contemplative, rather than evidential, language.

Popularising energy anatomy: Brought the chakra-and-energy-centre model to a mass Western audience as a map of how inner life and the body interrelate.

  • “Biography becomes biology”: Articulated a memorable thesis that personal history and unresolved emotion are stored in the body and express as illness — an energy-language version of mind-body causation.
  • The medical-intuitive role: Defined and popularised the figure of the intuitive who reads a person’s condition from their energy, a model carried widely through the self-help field.
  • Archetypes as inner pattern: In Sacred Contracts offered a twelve-archetype framework for self-understanding and life purpose, extending energy-anatomy thinking into psychology of identity.
Because Divine energy is inherent in our biological system, every thought that crosses our minds, every belief we nurture, every memory to which we cling translates into a positive or negative command to our bodies and spirits.

What drains your spirit drains your body. What fuels your spirit fuels your body.
