The joy of living / meditation and the brain

Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche is a Tibetan Buddhist master in the Kagyu and Nyingma lineages, son of the renowned Dzogchen teacher Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche, and author of The Joy of Living (2007) and In Love with the World.

He became internationally known both as a meditation teacher and as a subject of neuroscientific study: brain-imaging research on him at the University of Wisconsin documented striking patterns of activity during meditation, contributing to the broader contemplative-science dialogue associated with the Mind & Life Institute.

Mingyur Rinpoche’s significance for the Atlas is as a bridge between authentic Tibetan contemplative tradition and the scientific study of meditation’s effects on mind and brain. He teaches accessible, secularizable practices for awareness, equanimity, and recognizing the nature of mind, while his participation in neuroscience research lends empirical texture to claims about meditation’s measurable effects—claims that sit in the well-supported tier of the empirical analysis (stress reduction, neuroplasticity), distinct from the unverified metaphysical claims elsewhere in the tradition.

Accessible Tibetan practice: Made Mahamudra/Dzogchen-derived awareness techniques approachable for a global lay audience.

  • Contemplative neuroscience: Served as a research subject, helping document meditation’s measurable effects on the brain.
  • Joy and equanimity emphasis: Centered well-being and recognizing mind’s nature over goal-directed manifestation.
  • Empirically grounded bridge: Connected genuine contemplative training to the evidence-based meditation literature.

Influenced by: Tibetan Buddhism (Kagyu/Nyingma); his father Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche; Mahamudra/Dzogchen; the Mind & Life contemplative-science community.

  • Influenced: secular mindfulness; popular contemplative neuroscience; meditation practitioners worldwide.
