Zero-point field, intention experiments

Lynne McTaggart (1951–present) is a journalist and author whose books The Field (2001) and The Intention Experiment (2007) popularized the idea that a quantum zero-point field connects all matter and consciousness, and that focused human intention can measurably affect physical and biological systems at a distance.

She organized large-scale online “Intention Experiments” in which thousands of participants directed thoughts toward targets such as plants, water, or conflict zones, presenting the results as evidence of collective mind-over-matter.

McTaggart is a popularizer, not a scientist, and her central claims are widely discredited. The zero-point field is a real concept in quantum field theory, but it does not function as a cosmic information network linking minds; her usage is a textbook case of borrowing physics vocabulary to dignify a metaphysical claim.

Her intention experiments have not met the standards of controlled, replicated science: they typically lack rigorous controls, blinding, and pre-registration, and their reported effects are not accepted by mainstream researchers.

She is best understood as a key conduit translating fringe parapsychology and misread quantum physics into mass-market manifestation.

Zero-point field as cosmic mind: Repackaged a real QFT concept as a universal consciousness network — a foundational manifestation trope.

  • Group intention experiments: Ran mass participatory studies claiming distant mental influence, lacking accepted scientific rigor.
  • Bestseller bridge: The Field brought quantum-mysticism language to a huge popular audience.
  • “Science proves intention” framing: Supplied manifestation culture with a pseudo-empirical justification widely cited and widely debunked.

Influenced by: Harold Puthoff and zero-point-field researchers (whose work she reinterprets); parapsychology and distant-intention research.

  • Influenced: Modern manifestation and Law-of-Attraction discourse; group-prayer/intention movements; “we are all connected by the field” popular science.
