Arthur Machen

1863–1947 Ceremonial Magick Weird fiction / occult revival

Welsh visionary who made the numinous terrifying in prose.

Arthur Machen, born Arthur Llewellyn Jones in Caerleon, Wales, was an author and mystic celebrated for his supernatural and horror fiction. His novella ‘The Great God Pan’ is regarded as a classic of the genre and was praised by later writers including Stephen King.

He briefly joined the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn through his friend A.E. Waite, though his involvement remained peripheral.

He wrote landmark weird tales, including ‘The Great God Pan’ and ‘The White People’, that helped define modern supernatural horror.

A peripheral member of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn introduced by A.E. Waite, he drew on Celtic mysticism, mediaeval romance, and a mystical sense of the Welsh landscape.
