Recognising awareness through feeling-knowing

Francis Lucille (born 1944) is a French-born teacher of nonduality in the Advaita Vedanta “direct path.” Trained as a scientist at the École Polytechnique in Paris (1964), he worked in physics and missile testing before abandoning that career after encountering the writings of J.

Krishnamurti and the traditions of Vedanta and Zen. In 1975 he met Jean Klein, who became his teacher and friend until Klein’s death in 1998. Through Klein, Lucille stands in the lineage descending from Atmananda Krishna Menon, the originator of the “direct path.” He has taught satsang and retreats since 1981 and now lives in California; his books include The Perfume of Silence, Eternity Now, and Truth Love Beauty.

Lucille matters to the mind-power lineage as a transmitter of the direct-path method: rather than reaching awareness through long purification or concentration, the seeker investigates present experience until the ever-present knowing element, consciousness itself, is recognised.

Crucially, his approach is not merely intellectual but feeling-based, working with the felt sense of the body and the “perfume” of silent presence. His most famous student, Rupert Spira, has carried this feeling-centred direct path to a large contemporary audience, making Lucille a key node between classical Advaita and modern nondual teaching.

The direct path: Transmits Atmananda’s method of recognising awareness directly in present experience, bypassing gradual stages.

  • Feeling-based knowing: Emphasises the felt, bodily sense of presence over purely conceptual understanding.
  • The “perfume of silence”: Points to the tangible peace of silent awareness as the ground and goal of inquiry.
  • Science-to-Spirit bridge: As a former physicist, frames consciousness as the irreducible knowing in all experience, influencing the Science and Nonduality dialogue.
When the attention frees itself from perceptions that hold it in thrall, it discovers itself as that self-luminous space which is the true substance of the body.
Eternity Now (2006)
As soon as you become aware that you are hypnotized, the hypnosis ceases.
Eternity Now (2006)
The occurrence of these thoughts and feelings is less of a problem than your identification with them. As soon as you become aware of them, you distance yourself. You are free.
Eternity Now (2006)
Your body is in you. You are not in it.
Eternity Now (2006)
The world as well as your body and your mind are included in your true self. Love is inclusion. Understanding is an intermediate step, but the final destination, the true center, is the heart.
Eternity Now (2006)
If you let go of the branch to which you are clinging without catching hold of another, you fall into the heart.
Eternity Now (2006)
In fact, all things appear by themselves in consciousness, which is always in total openness.
Eternity Now (2006)
From the moment you are alive, you are open. Openness is your nature.
Eternity Now (2006)
Surrender and be what you already are, absolute stillness.
Eternity Now (2006)
It is a tornado of freedom that blows where it will, erasing in its passage ephemeral attachments and false ideas, until only the indestructible remains: the true, the eternal.
