George Leonard

1923–2010 Transpersonal Psychology Human Potential Movement

A writer and Aikido master who championed mastery as a lifelong path.

George Leonard was an American writer and a leading figure of the Human Potential Movement, serving as president of the Esalen Institute. A senior editor at Look magazine from 1953 to 1970, he wrote books including Education and Ecstasy, The Ultimate Athlete, and Mastery. He held a fifth-degree black belt in Aikido.

He authored influential books on human potential and, with Michael Murphy, co-founded Integral Transformative Practice; he also developed Leonard Energy Training.

As president of the Esalen Institute and a collaborator with Michael Murphy, he helped articulate and lead the Human Potential Movement.
