Eliminating limiting beliefs at the root
The transmission
Morty Lefkoe (1937–2015) was an American consultant-turned-personal-change practitioner who created The Lefkoe Method, a structured set of processes for permanently eliminating self-limiting beliefs and the emotions conditioned to them.
Originally a management consultant, Lefkoe developed his first and central process — the Lefkoe Belief Process (LBP) — in 1985 (the year he reports first eliminating a belief in himself), refining it through work with clients struggling with eating disorders, depression, anxiety, hostility, and other persistent problems.
He set out the method in his 1997 book Re-create Your Life: Transforming Yourself and Your World (Andrews McMeel), later co-founded the Lefkoe Institute with his wife Shelly, and built an online program (Natural Confidence) before his death from cancer in November 2015.
Lefkoe’s place in the Atlas is as a clean, secular, constructivist statement of an old mind-power conviction: that the “facts” running our lives are mostly interpretations we ourselves assigned to neutral events, usually in childhood.
Where Byron Katie questions a belief’s truth through inquiry and New Thought re-impresses the subconscious through affirmation, Lefkoe targets the moment of formation — guiding a person to see they invented the belief as one reading among several equally valid ones, so that it stops registering as “the truth” and dissolves.
He sits beside the energy-psychology and belief-clearing cluster (Nims, ThetaHealing’s belief work, FasterEFT) but, like Nims, strips the method to a purely cognitive procedure with no tapping or muscle-testing. His core insight — meaning is assigned, not found (Only Love Is Real) — links him directly to the constructivist and cognitive-restructuring lineage.
What they gave
The Lefkoe Belief Process (LBP): A questioning procedure that surfaces a limiting belief, traces it to the childhood events that “produced” it, and shows it was an invented interpretation — not the truth — so it disappears.
- The Lefkoe Stimulus Process (LStimP): A faster de-conditioning process (developed 1997) that dissolves an automatic emotional reaction by distinguishing the trigger’s assigned meaning from the original cause of the feeling.
- Belief as interpretation: Articulated, in plain secular terms, that core beliefs are meanings we gave to “a meaningless series of events” — a constructivist restatement of Only Love Is Real.
- Root-cause over symptom: Positioned belief-elimination as deeper and more lasting than managing thoughts or behaviors after the fact.
The line they stand in
Influenced by: cognitive psychology; constructivism (meaning as constructed, not given); NLP and the broader 1970s–80s personal-change milieu.
- Influenced: belief-change coaching and the belief-clearing wing of self-help; practitioners trained in the Lefkoe Method.
