The transmission
Lama Surya Das (born Jeffrey Miller, 1950-present) is one of the most prominent American-born lamas, trained for years in the Tibetan tradition under Dzogchen and Kagyu/Nyingma masters and recognized as a lama in his own right.
His bestselling Awakening the Buddha Within (1997) and its sequels translated Tibetan Dzogchen and the “natural great perfection” into plain, practical American idiom, presenting the recognition of one’s innate awakened nature as available within ordinary life.
He founded the Dzogchen Center and has been a leading voice in adapting Tibetan natural-awareness teaching for Western practitioners without monastic training. For the mind-power lineage, Lama Surya Das functions as a key Westernizing bridge for the Tibetan natural-mind stream.
His core message—that an already-awakened nature (“the Buddha within”) is present and recognizable beneath ordinary thought—aligns the Dzogchen “natural state” with the broader modern current of “you are already complete / already aware,” shared with nondual teachers.
By rendering Dzogchen’s effortless, non-contrived awareness into accessible language, he helped make the Tibetan version of consciousness-as-ground intelligible to the same Western audience drawn to manifestation and consciousness-first spirituality, positioning natural-awareness recognition as the contemplative complement to those more goal-oriented teachings.
