Clairvoyant reading of the human energy field, auras and chakras

Dora van Gelder Kunz (born Theodora Sophia van Gelder, 28 April 1904 – 25 August 1999) was a Dutch-American clairvoyant, author and Theosophist. Born on a sugar plantation in the Dutch East Indies (Java) into a family active in the Theosophical Society, she reported seeing “ethereal beings” and subtle energy fields from early childhood.

As a young woman she was taken under the wing of the prominent Theosophist and clairvoyant C. W. Leadbeater in Sydney, who helped train and discipline her psychic faculties.

She emigrated to the United States, married Theosophical lecturer Fritz Kunz, and rose through the movement to serve as President of the Theosophical Society in America from 1975 to 1987. Across her life she described diagnosing illness by observing changes in patients’ auras and chakras, and she wrote a series of books drawing on these claimed perceptions, including The Real World of Fairies (1977), The Personal Aura (1991), and Spiritual Healing (1995).

Kunz’s most consequential contribution lies outside Theosophy proper. In the early 1970s she joined with Dolores Krieger, a professor of nursing science at New York University, to develop Therapeutic Touch (TT), a secular, contemplative reworking of the traditional “laying on of hands” in which a practitioner aims to sense and rebalance a patient’s “human energy field” by passing the hands at a distance from the body.

Kunz supplied the clairvoyant framework of fields, auras and chakras; Krieger gave it a nursing vocabulary and a route into the university curriculum. The honest reading of the evidence is that the postulated energy field has never been demonstrated under controlled conditions — a single-blind test designed by nine-year-old Emily Rosa, published in JAMA in 1998, found practitioners could not detect the field better than chance — and the relaxation patients report is better explained by attentive presence and expectancy.

Kunz’s reported perceptions are thus best treated as sincere subjective experience and an influential esoteric framework rather than verified observation.

Co-developing Therapeutic Touch: With Dolores Krieger, supplied the clairvoyant model of auras, chakras and a “human energy field” that became the conceptual basis of one of the most widely taught non-contact healing methods in nursing.

  • Theosophical leadership: Served as President of the Theosophical Society in America (1975–1987), shaping the movement’s mid-century direction.
  • Esoteric anatomy in print: Her books on the personal aura, chakras and the human energy field popularised a detailed subtle-body framework for later energy-healing practitioners.

Influenced by: the Theosophical tradition of subtle bodies, auras and clairvoyant perception, transmitted directly through her training with C. W. Leadbeater and her family’s long involvement in the Theosophical Society.

  • Influenced: Dolores Krieger and, through their joint creation of Therapeutic Touch, the international community of TT practitioners and the wider absorption of energy-field concepts into nursing and complementary care.
