Gareth Knight
Western mystery pathworking
The transmission
Gareth Knight (born Basil Wilby) was a British occultist and one of the most prolific and respected teachers of the 20th-century Western Mystery tradition, working within the current descended from Dion Fortune’s Society of the Inner Light.
His A Practical Guide to Qabalistic Symbolism (1965) became a standard study of the Tree of Life and its correspondences, and across many books he developed and taught pathworking and myth-based magical practice, drawing especially on Arthurian, Grail, and Western mythic material as vehicles for inner work.
Knight’s contribution to the lineage is his clear codification and popularization of Western Mystery pathworking—guided, symbol-rich inner journeys used for self-development and contact with archetypal forces.
By systematizing the Tree of Life as a study-map and pairing it with practical guided-imagination techniques, he made structured visionary practice accessible to a wide modern readership. His use of myth (the Grail, Arthurian legend) as the content of pathworkings connects ceremonial magic to the archetypal-narrative stream (Campbell, the Jungians) elsewhere in this Atlas, and his emphasis on inner contact and imaginative journeying aligns the tradition firmly with the visualization-and-imagination core of the mind-power family.
Knight is a principal modern transmitter of practical Western esoteric technique.
