A Teacher

Awareness glimpses, ‘small glimpses, many times’
The transmission
Loch Kelly (MDiv, LCSW) is an American meditation teacher and psychotherapist, and the founder of the nonprofit Open-Hearted Awareness Institute (also styled the Effortless Mindfulness Institute).
During graduate study at Columbia University he received a fellowship to Sri Lanka, India, and Nepal, where he practised with teachers in the Tibetan and Theravada lineages; he has since collaborated with neuroscientists at Yale and NYU on how awareness training affects compassion and attention.
His books include Shift into Freedom: The Science and Practice of Open-Hearted Awareness (Sounds True, 2015) and The Way of Effortless Mindfulness. (His birth year is not reliably published, so it is left as contemporary rather than guessed.) Kelly matters to the mind-power lineage as a translator of advanced nondual techniques into accessible, secular micro-practices.
Drawing especially on Tibetan Dzogchen and Mahamudra “pointing-out” instructions, he distils them into short glimpses, brief, eyes-open shifts from thought-based knowing into “awake awareness,” practised “small glimpses, many times” until the new vantage stabilises.
This effortless-mindfulness model differs from concentration-based meditation: rather than building focus through strain, it recognises an already-present, spacious awareness and learns to live from it, a method that has spread widely through contemporary mindfulness culture.
What they gave
Effortless mindfulness: Reframes meditation as recognising an already-awake awareness rather than effortfully constructing calm.
- Glimpse practices: Develops short, repeatable, eyes-open “glimpses” usable throughout daily life (“small glimpses, many times”).
- Open-hearted awareness: Names a clear, loving, interconnected awareness as the natural ground beneath the busy mind.
- Bridge to neuroscience: Connects nondual awareness training with contemplative-neuroscience research on compassion and attention.
In their words
Rest as the awareness that is aware without using thought.
The big realization when we go beyond the ego is simply seeing that we’ve always been ok.
When the heart doesn’t go out to look for love, but looks instead back to its source—the ground of Being—we can discover unconditional love as who we have always been.
Open-hearted awareness doesn’t consciously reference thoughts but instead rests deeply within an intelligence that is intuitively connected with all we know.
The identity that begins the journey is not who we know ourselves to be upon awakening.
We can learn to return home to our open hearts at any moment.
After all, all weather comes and goes, and no storm ever hurt the sky.
The line they stand in
