Vasugupta / Kashmir Shaivism
Consciousness self-expresses as reality
The transmission
Kashmir Shaivism is a non-dual tantric tradition that flourished in the Kashmir valley roughly between the eighth and twelfth centuries CE. Its textual foundation is traditionally traced to the sage Vasugupta (c. 8th–9th century), credited with receiving or revealing the Shiva Sutras, and the tradition was later given its supreme philosophical synthesis by Abhinavagupta (c.
950–1020). Texts such as the Shiva Sutras and the Vijnana Bhairava Tantra form its operational and contemplative core. Where Shankara’s Advaita tends to treat the world as maya to be seen through, Kashmir Shaivism advances a distinctive “recognition” (pratyabhijna) nondualism in which reality is the dynamic, joyous self-expression (spanda, vibration) of a single universal consciousness identified as Shiva.
Manifestation is not an illusion to be negated but the play of consciousness with itself, and liberation is the recognition that the individual subject is identical with that foundational awareness. Critically for the mind-power lineage, the Vijnana Bhairava Tantra converts this metaphysics into a direct contemplative technology: it catalogs over a hundred techniques (dharanas) for catching the absolute in the gap between breaths, in intense sensation, in sudden shock, in the void, in perception itself—implying that any experience whatsoever can become a doorway to the ground of consciousness.
This makes the tradition a deep ancestor of both modern meditation practice and “everything is consciousness” manifestation discourse.
What they gave
Reality as consciousness’s self-expression: Frames the world not as illusion but as the vibrational (spanda) play of one universal awareness (Shiva).
- Recognition (pratyabhijna): Defines liberation as recognizing the individual subject’s identity with the absolute, a nondual “remembering” mechanism.
- Experience as access-point: Through the Vijnana Bhairava Tantra, supplies a systematic toolkit turning breath, sensation, shock, and void into doorways to the absolute.
- Contemplative technology: Converts metaphysics into reproducible technique, a direct ancestor of method-based meditation and state-access practice.
In their words
Awareness which has absolute freedom of all knowledge and activity is the Self or nature of Reality.
We laud that Sankara by whose mere opening and shutting of the eye-lids there is the appearance and dissolution of the world and who is the source of the glorious powers of the collective whole of the saktis (the divine energy in various forms).
