A Teacher

Annie Horniman

1860–1937 Ceremonial Magick Occult revival / theatre patronage

Tea heiress whose money sustained both magic and modern theatre.

Annie Elizabeth Fredericka Horniman was a wealthy British heiress, theatre patron, and member of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. She was introduced to the order through S.L. MacGregor Mathers and Moina Mathers, and used her fortune to fund the perpetually impoverished couple.

Later she pioneered English repertory theatre, financing the Abbey Theatre in Dublin and founding the first repertory company at the Gaiety Theatre in Manchester.

She bankrolled Mathers and the Golden Dawn’s work and went on to establish the modern English repertory theatre movement.

A member of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn who rose to office within it, she was drawn in through her friendship with Moina and S.L. MacGregor Mathers before a later break.
