James Hollis

Mid-life individuation map

James Hollis is an American Jungian analyst and prolific author, trained at the Jung Institute in Zurich, who became one of the most widely read contemporary writers on depth psychology and the search for meaning.

His influential The Middle Passage: From Misery to Meaning in Midlife (1993) reframed the mid-life crisis as a developmental summons—the point at which the “provisional self” built to meet others’ expectations breaks down and the deeper task of individuation, of living one’s own authentic life, comes due.

Across many subsequent books he has explored fear, meaning, the second half of life, and the cost of failing to confront the unconscious. Hollis’s relevance to the consciousness and wellbeing lineage is his application of Jungian individuation to the concrete existential question of how to live a meaningful life, with unusual psychological honesty.

His insistence that maturation requires facing difficult truths, taking responsibility, and enduring discomfort offers a sober, depth-oriented alternative to the quick-fix promises common in self-help and manifestation culture.

Rather than teaching techniques to acquire desired outcomes, Hollis directs attention to becoming who one authentically is—an individuation-centered counterweight that aligns the depth-psychology branch with a wellbeing-conscious, meaning-first orientation.

Mid-life individuation map: Reframed the mid-life crisis as a developmental call to authenticity.

  • Provisional self vs. authentic self: Diagnosed the breakdown of the externally-built identity.
  • Meaning over technique: Centered the search for meaning rather than outcome-acquisition.
  • Honest, sober depth work: Offered a mature counterweight to quick-fix self-help.
